"Marco Roccia, Maker of the Clifford Essex Concert Size Spanish Guitar was an Englishman born to Italian Parents. He started his Instrument-making Apprenticeship as a Boy; 1st in his father’s Workshops in Cassino, Italy & later in Paris. He returned to the Land of his Birth in 1927, when he joined the Clifford Essex Co & became one of the Craftsmen who produced the many 1,000s of Guitars (of all kinds) that bear this World-famous name. After Demobilisation in 1945, Marco Roccia returned to his position with the Clifford Essex Music Co & was solely responsible for all Repair work to Fretted Instruments entrusted to this Company. In addition, he crafted some very beautiful Instruments, including the “Concert Size” Classical Guitars, Plectrum Guitars, Banjos & Mandolins, all of which were entirely hand-made by this Craftsman Luthier, Marco remained with the Company for over 30-yrs. Before the War, every time Segovia came to London, he would come to Clifford Essex to have his Guitar put in order by Marco. He recalls “Segovia was very friendly with Mr Clifford Essex. In those days, the Office was in Bond Street & the Workshop at the Oval. Mr Clifford Essex Jr used to bring the Guitars down about twice a week in a Taxi. I repaired Segovia’s Hauser 3 or 4 times,. either re-Fretting or giving it a New Saddle."
